Oh yeah, the Packer game

...and it was actually a pretty good game.

But the color commentary really pissed me off. I mean really pissed me off.

Why?

Farve is a passing QB. It's all he's ever been. Last year was a bad, bad year for the man, throwing more interceptions than in any other season.

At the beginning of this season, it was clear that our new "coach" was going to concentrate on a running game...which failed miserably. In fact, if you looked at some of the cuts and pick ups early in the season, it's pretty damn clear that the front office was looking to build the Post-Farve Packers, which makes sense of course...but the man can still play.

Anyway, in Miami...

The man was throwing yesterday. He was threading needles and hitting routes all over the place.

He hit a TD that was a real laser. Thread it right through 2 d's and after a small tip, hit his mark.

And what did the color commenter have to say about it?

"Wow, what a bad and risky play. I can't believe Farve would just take such a risk with where they are."

Let's review...the man just threw a touchdown... Apparently, I wasn't the only one a bit...put off by the comment, as witnessed by the other commentator, "That's Farve for you, he knows how to squeeze those in there."

But the color guy wouldn't let it go, "It's just too risky. Miami was all over that zone and that was an easy pick waiting to happen."

The kept going back to a reply of the TD the rest of the game so that this jackass could show us all why it was such a lousy and horrible play.

Packers won, by the way. Green and Driver actually played some good ball yesterday. Stepped up at a time they really needed to.

We're not gonna see the post season, ain't no way that's gonna happen. But it was a great day of football.

Color commentary is bad all over. There was one game I was watching yesterday - I think it was Lions-Jets, though it might have been Pats-Bills - when a receiver on a third and long made a catch on a short pass, was hit but then somehow kept his balance and went forward a couple of extra yards. It was still well short of the first down, though.

But the color guy was going on an on about what a great play this guy had just made - how it might be a turning point in the game. Those two extra yards meant nothing, it was not a turning point.

Of course these guys are encouraged to ratchet up the drama but it just makes them look like fools.

Glad to see Miami lose, though, if only because SI had them winning the Super Bowl this year. Makes you wonder what they heck they were smokin'.

I never was a Farve fan, but it's good to see he still has some magic in that arm.

He's done a lot for the game, some good and some bad, but he's a definite first ballot hall of famer.

Color comentary always sucks. But welcome to the hell of being a fan of a hall of fame QB who is near the end of his career...but clearly NOT at the end of his career. Favre reminds me of Marino right now. We LOVED Dan down here and would have been fine with Miami continuing to try and build a team around him till he called it quits...then building for the future.

But like the Packers, they tried to build for the future while the present QB was still playing.

Hopefully it doesn't work out for you like it did for us. 8(

You hit the nail on the head, Dave. I think we had a front office that was pretty much banking on a post-Farve team, half the reason they got rid of our "old" coach.

It's not like Farve doesn't hold some of the blame here. He waited forever to announce he was returning and beyond the potential of there being a Farve-less team this year, I think it finally shot a wakeup call to the front office that said, "I'm not gonna be here forever, guys."

I think in the end, Farve was a bit more selfish than he needed to be. Sure he's had a rough couple of years in his personal life, but he could have stated his intentions a lot more clearly and early than he did.

I think he forced the front office to be proactive in their rebuilding efforts. Sucks, but I think their hand somewhat.

Could they have held off? I'm sure they could have. But when you come off a 4-12 season, why wait?

Off topic...but do you have atom feeds available? I know another blogger account that has them enabled so I can see their blog posts on my LJ friends page.
