Trick or Treat!

Happy Halloween

I've never gotten into this holiday, but now that I have boys...I'm sort of being dragged into it, kicking and screaming...

But this helps:

Oh yeah, the Packer game

...and it was actually a pretty good game.

But the color commentary really pissed me off. I mean really pissed me off.

Why?

Farve is a passing QB. It's all he's ever been. Last year was a bad, bad year for the man, throwing more interceptions than in any other season.

At the beginning of this season, it was clear that our new "coach" was going to concentrate on a running game...which failed miserably. In fact, if you looked at some of the cuts and pick ups early in the season, it's pretty damn clear that the front office was looking to build the Post-Farve Packers, which makes sense of course...but the man can still play.

Anyway, in Miami...

The man was throwing yesterday. He was threading needles and hitting routes all over the place.

He hit a TD that was a real laser. Thread it right through 2 d's and after a small tip, hit his mark.

And what did the color commenter have to say about it?

"Wow, what a bad and risky play. I can't believe Farve would just take such a risk with where they are."

Let's review...the man just threw a touchdown... Apparently, I wasn't the only one a bit...put off by the comment, as witnessed by the other commentator, "That's Farve for you, he knows how to squeeze those in there."

But the color guy wouldn't let it go, "It's just too risky. Miami was all over that zone and that was an easy pick waiting to happen."

The kept going back to a reply of the TD the rest of the game so that this jackass could show us all why it was such a lousy and horrible play.

Packers won, by the way. Green and Driver actually played some good ball yesterday. Stepped up at a time they really needed to.

We're not gonna see the post season, ain't no way that's gonna happen. But it was a great day of football.

Studio 60 being sly?

There is only so far I can take this particular argument, but it was an interesting one.

One of my co-workers points out that perhaps Studio 60 is bad on purpose. Much like SNL has been dying a long, slow, lingering death...maybe we're supposed to feel the same way about Studio 60?

Much like the first couple seasons of The West Wing, where Bartlet is pretty much crippled by polls and not wanting to do anything "too liberal" (Until Leo comes up with "Let Bartlet be Bartlet"), maybe we're suppose to see this team get to a turning point where they realize that everything they've been doing is useless, utter crap...and then they make a huge turn-around.

Mind you, I don't truly buy into this, but looking at Sorkin's other efforts, it would fit a general patten he seems to fall into.

Still, I cannot buy the "Harriet Has Talent" bullshit at all.

Criminal Minds...something I need to check in on?

I'm a big fan of Mandy P. (I miss Chicago Hope and Dead Like Me), and I've only recently seen that he's featured on Criminal Minds on CBS.

So is this thing any good? I've kept away from the crime-drama things on CBS because...well...I've just not found them all that good or entertaining.

Opinions?

Studio 60...still not funny

OK, so I gave it another chance.

Harriet still isn't funny (or all that talented from what I can see), the back-stories are lame and uninspired, Matt's "brilliant writing" is far from brilliant...or close to writing as the absolutely horrible show-within-a-show demonstrates.

Indeed, the series feels like a heavily watered-down version of The West Wing, dammit.

On the other hand, 30 Rock is much better than it has a right to be.

It does not take much to make me happy

An overheard conversation at the Y after Ben's swim lesson:

Tony: Why does your Dad call you "Sir"?

Ben: Because he respects me.

Tony: You call your Dad "Sir" too?

Ben: Yeah, because I respect him.

Tony: That's weird.

Ben: You should try it.

Another win for the Wolves

Ben's team had another banner day yesterday, putting away their game with a 5-0 win. I was impressed that the team seemed to find a bit of growth this week, with a passing game becoming more evident.

We stuck around for another games. Our neighbors daughter had a game right after ours and we wanted to add our support. They has a little striker named Oscar who's gunning to be the next soccer superstar. Kid scored something on the order of 10 goals before he was pulled from the game to give the other team a chance. It was pretty amazing to watch, the kid clearly has talent...but little in the way of sportsmanship. He was rather..."vocal" at being pulled.

Still, it was a fun afternoon.

A phrase I'm getting REALLY tired of...

"In this post 9/11 world"

sigh

Made me laugh way too much

Did you hear about that new Emo Grass?

It cuts itself.

Studio 60...fun while it lasted

I had rather high hopes for this show. While I didn't think it was going to approach the quality of The West Wing, I thought with Sorkin aboard, we were going to see some quality drama and wit.

I was...wrong.

It started strong enough, powerfully even. I thought getting the mains "back" into the show was handled well and executed in a somewhat reasonable fashion. And hey, I liked seeing Matt Perry back on TV, he can be fun to watch.

Each subsequent episode though...not so much.

Part of the problem here has got to be actually writing the show within the show, or the show for the show. I just don't buy the "talent" these guys are supposedly bringing to the table. The few scraps of skits we've seen...yeah...they've recreated SNL pretty well...if they're going for the current suck-factor. And someone please tell Sorkin that G&S isn't comedy gold?

And Harriet? Just not funny. Sorry, I don't buy the fact that this woman is the uber-talent of the cast. She can't pull it off. She's actually become annoying in the short amount of time she's been on screen. Nothing she says or does indicates funny.

The best part of about the show thus far? The writer's room. They've been "shut out" of the production since Matt and Danny come back to town, but so far, they've been the only ones on the whole show to provide a consistent funny.

If it's around next season, I may look in on it again, but for now it's just become a waste of time.

Monday night is yet again a TV wasteland..that is until Anthony Bourdain gives us some new episodes in Jan.

But on Clinton's watch...

OK, this is starting to get really, really freaking stupid.

I'm getting damn sick and tired of the currently admin blaming Clinton for what they seem to be framing...Clinton "enabled" the current war on terror via his shortcomings in office. Is this the new GOP strategy now? Let's get the base pissed off about Clinton again so they don't feel so dirty voting for us in the mid-terms?

You boys have been in power for six freaking years now...and that's the best you can come up with?

I shutter to think what the real GOP October Surprise will end up being.

Three Trophies came home yesterday

The boy netted two 3rd place awards, and one 2nd place. Not bad at all for his first serious competition. He was just about beaming when he got home.

He also discovered the value of a good mouthguard...in a rather direct fashion.

Part the First

We won, 4-1. Ben's shaping up to be quite the striker.

Ben's Big Day

-Soccer game this morning. The boy runs the field, up and down, the entire game. He's excited.

-Martial Arts tournament right after the freaking game. Yep, he'll pay a full soccer game then compete.

Should prove to be interesting.

I've been pretty worried that we've been "over-scheduling" the boy. He's got swim lessons on Monday, his Tai-Kwan-Do on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, soccer practice on Thursdays and games on Saturdays.

Jo's opinion that him being active and engaged is what's important. I tend to agree, but I don't want my eight-year-old to start having stress issues or pushing himself too hard. He needs to have a childhood.

He's been frank about it in the past. I just hope he has the emotional maturity to tell us if it's really affecting him negatively.

Very proud of that boy. He's an amazing kid.

100 Reviews in 100 Days

I'm out of my freakin' mind.

So here's the deal...

Yes, I'm starting to actually blog again.

No, I don't have any long term or short term plans on how it's going to happen.

Why? Because I can and because I don't think I've given it it's due. Plus, it's cheaper than therapy.

Do you care? Probably not, but those are the breaks.

A test

If this works, it means I can post to the blog via my BlackBerry...and that's a good thing.

What now?

I've been given/seen a chance to possibly get my teacher cert. for the state, and would have the chance to be placed in a HS within about 24 months.

Of course, it means going about $24k more into debt in student loans...and leaving a job I really like in about a year...but it's really appealing.
